Nutrients are substances obtained by eating and drinking that are essential for the human body to function normally. The six classes of nutrients are: carbohydrates (starches, sugars, and fiber), lipids (fats and oils), proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. Nutrients in food provide materials essential for growth, maintenance, and regulation of body processes, and energy production. The presence of many nutrients can be detected using simple chemical tests. In this activity, pairs of students use a variety of reagents to test different solutions for the presence of a simple sugar, starch, oil, protein, and Vitamin C.
