Quick Review:

  • Study, test, and observe the characteristic properties of acids and bases
  • Prepare, collect, and test hydrogen safely
  • Prepare, collect and test carbon dioxide safely
  • Observe the effects of acids and bases on indicator dyes
  • Measure the concentration of acids by titration of an “unknown”
  • Perform a neutralization experiment between an acid and a base to form a salt

Details

In this activity, students observe various acid and base reactions. They observe the effect of acids and bases on the chemical indicators litmus and phenolphthalein. They also observe that not all metals react equally with acids and not all acids, even those with the same concentration, react equally with metals. Students also collect and identify the gas produced when an acid reacts with a carbonate and perform a simple titration to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. This kit is complete for 48 students.
